Re-opening the trail has obviously required a full safety assessment, and there is copious signage in place, plus additional metal barriers to extend the original bridge parapets and to provide some separation from the rock faces in the approach to the tunnel, as illustrated above and below. A metal arch at the tunnel entrance provides some protection from falling rock, and lighting has been installed in the tunnel.

There is a detailed and really interesting description of the complexity and vision of the project in the 15 January 2011 blog entry of Jim Dixon, Chief Executive of the National Park - well worth a read - it includes John Ruskin's well-known quote lambasting the coming of the railway in the 1860's.
